’08 Advent Calendar, Day 18

Bon Appetit’s selection of food blogs for the holidays is well worth checking out. You can’t go wrong with mixed nuts at Christmas, as my dad will attest, but roasted sweet and spicy nuts? OK, now you’re flirting with perfection.

Presenting my new love, the pomelo, dressed up in brulée for the holidays. Doesn’t this look like some fabulous ensemble Shirley MacLaine would’ve worn in What a Way to Go?

’08 Advent Calendar, Day 16

Amy | Advent Calendar 2008, Christmas, Desserts, Fruit, Grapes, Pictures | Tuesday, December 16th, 2008 |

Grapes are just about the perfect snack already, so I almost felt guilty for dipping them in bittersweet chocolate then coating them with walnuts. Almost.

What? Like I’m not going to make truffles at Christmas? I adapted Alton Brown’s recipe by adding minced mission figs to the ganache, and while the truffles were delicious, they were truly a lot of work. I may just leave this one to the experts in the future.

’08 Advent Calendar, Day 14

Amy | Advent Calendar 2008, Breakfast, Christmas, Oranges, Pancakes, Pictures, Pomegranate | Sunday, December 14th, 2008 |

A new spin on an old favorite: Orange and pomegranate pancakes. Just the motivation (and sugar rush) you need to finish your Christmas shopping.

I’ve got a girl-crush on Ina Garten. Her parmesan and thyme crackers are perfection — rich, savory, and altogether delicious. I suggest making a double batch: Give half as gifts and freeze the other half to bake a few whenever you get the craving.

’08 Advent Calendar, Day 12

Amy | Daily | Friday, December 12th, 2008 |

Celebrate the season! Just take it easy at the office party, or you’ll be sending an email like the one I received a few years ago:

You’re the last person I remember talking to on Wednesday night. Everything kind of went black at some point & I don’t remember how I got home. All I know is that I woke up on my living room floor Thursday morning, covered in candle wax. How much of an ass did I make of myself at the party? And how embarrassed should I be today?

Mmmmmmadeleines … pristine, snowy, pillowy, brown buttery madeleines.

I know it’s supposed to be the season of giving, but … you can’t have them. They’re all miiiiiiiine. (Moo-hooo-haaa-haaaaa-haaaaaaah!)

’08 Advent Calendar, Day 10

Amy | Advent Calendar 2008, Apples, Christmas, Fruit, Pictures | Wednesday, December 10th, 2008 |

These cinnamon apple chips were a real success story — every bit as successful as the cumin-flavored pear chips were disastrous. And, of course, they make a lovely (and relatively healthy) departure from the sea of butter we all find ourselves swimming in this time of year.

’08 Advent Calendar, Day 9

Amy | Advent Calendar 2008, Christmas, Cookies, Pictures | Tuesday, December 9th, 2008 |

Keep it traditional with these Vintage Jam Tarts. They’re a little schlumpy and imprecise (at least the way I make them), but that only adds to their charm. And the jammy filling complements the cornmeal cookies beautifully.
