We’ve been meaning to take the tree down anyway, but this was a close call — it missed the house by a foot or so. For details, see here and here. And the full set of pics is here.
I’ve had a lot of trouble sleeping through storms since I moved to Ringwood, but now that the threat of a tree falling through the bedroom is a real one, I’ll be reading in the basement whenever the wind picks up.

I was always terrified by the throught of any of the tree crahing onto the house in a storm, but this tree was special and I somehow felt a little protected by it –
I suppose there’s some truth about not tampering with nature – when it was time for the tree to fall then it did, and without hurting anyone, or anyone’s property (although it oks like Gil’s car was very close to being in harm’s way)
anyway, sleep well Amy …..
(I guess your years in St.Louis taught you the value of retreating to the basement whenever the sound of thte tornado siren was “heard in the land”)
I was very lucky and only had to beat a retreat to the basement once in all my years in St. Louis! But I do remember riding out a few hurricanes in Louisiana, so the feeling of impending weather-related doom is one I’m very familiar with.
What’s strange about this storm is that it toppled trees, but my herbs didn’t budge; they’re still sitting on the balcony in their tiny nursery containers.
