I grew up in Paterson on East 25th street and was friend to Selena . I was also a patient of Dr Capers during my childhood. Wonderful family..my memories have faded but one thing stands out..I had a doll that I named Michelle..after Selena sister. I also remember Selena's mother as being a very beautiful woman and so kind to me. Ofcourse Dr Capers was the best and my entire family was under his care until we moved away in 1959.

Interesting list, interesting comments. The books on that list I'm more or less dead certain have no business being on it are the Franzen, the McCarthy, and the McEwen. But then I must in fairness make it clear that I've only read ONE of the books on the list, I've finished reading books by only two of the remaining authors, I've read sundry shorter works by two others, and have attempted to read, and bounced off of, books by another four, and I quote as the lead epigraph in a 9,000-word essay I wrote that's due to be published at April's end one of the many books I have neither read nor attempted to read, that last courtesy of its use as the lead to an article published a year and a half ago in The New Yorker, a quote that, I learned a month ago from the Taiwanese man who translated my essay into Chinese, The New Yorker got wrong.

I'll admit, I'm astonished to see World War Z on your list, a book I bounced off of rather emphatically a month or so ago; but heck, the fact that it made your grade has me half thinking I should try again.

Books I would add to the list are:

Confessions of a Pagan Nun (2002), by Kate Horsley

The Years of Rice and Salt (2002), by Kim Stanley Robinson

Pattern Recognition (2003), by William Gibson

The Changeling of Finnistuath (2003; reprinted as The Changeling in 2005), by Kate Horsley; this book should have won the James Tiptree, Jr. award for the year it came out, but wasn't even nominated.

Pandora's Star (2004) and Judas Unchained (2005), by Peter F. Hamilton

Counting Heads (2005), by David Marusek

Zeroville (2007), by Steve Erickson

Dark Reflections (2007), by Samuel R. Delany

The Tragedy of Arthur (2011), by Arthur Phillips

2312 (2012), by Kim Stanley Robinson

Simeon was my roommate for one semester at LSU (1996/1997). He and I both worked at the Faculty Club restaurant and became good friends. He was so full of life and enjoyed every second of it...I still remember his smile and he had a great personality. He was so passionate about music, soccer, and life in general...He will never be forgotten...Rest in Peace...
