Condolences to his family and friends.<\/p>\n<p>The first concert I ever went to was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vh1.com\/artists\/az\/asia\/artist.jhtml\" target=\"_blank\">Asia<\/a>, back in 1983. My mom&#8217;s friend John was the band&#8217;s financial manager. After the show, we got to go backstage to meet the band and guest emcee that night, MTV VJ <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2001\/SHOWBIZ\/TV\/08\/02\/mtv.hunter.cnna\/\" target=\"_blank\">Alan Hunter<\/a> (the blond one)! Trust me: the VJs used to be celebrities. Of course, this was back in the time when MTV showed music videos.<\/p>\n<p>The next concert I went to was Tom Petty &#038; the Heartbreakers, with Til Tuesday opening up. I don&#8217;t go to shows much anymore, and certainly not &#8220;concerts.&#8221; Most of the music I listen to nowadays comes from acts that are either <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-bunker.org\/ted\/ted.html\" target=\"_blank\">dead<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snarl.org\/texts\/features\/palominos.htm\" target=\"_blank\">defunct<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gorillaz.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">drawn<\/a> or probably <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dirty.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">not too good live<\/a> (unless the audience is dosed on X).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>JJ Jackson, one of the initial five VJs on MTV, died yesterday.
