(I also met <a href=\"http:\/\/www.garypanter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gary Panter<\/a> at that event, but that&#8217;s another story). I asked why they were so excited about their new <a href=\"http:\/\/imdb.com\/title\/tt0120685\/\" target=\"_blank\">Godzilla<\/a> flick. Grinning from ear to ear, one of the Japanese execs told me, &#8220;Because this time Godzilla destroys <em>New York<\/em>!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That movie may&#8217;ve been the first to violate my rule that <a href=\"http:\/\/imdb.com\/name\/nm0000606\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jean Reno<\/a> makes any movie good, but it seems to have helped kicked off a trend of movies about New York getting smacked down. This <a href=\"http:\/\/cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com\/2007\/12\/26\/the-irresistible-urge-to-destroy-new-york-on-screen\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">post from a NYTimes Cityroom blog<\/a> offers a timeline of great New York ass-whompings, pre- and post-9\/11, and links to a <a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/daily\/entertainment\/2007\/12\/list_ten_best_movie_des.html\" target=\"_blank\">New York mag Top 10 list of &#8217;em<\/a>, too.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m just glad New Jersey tends to get off easy.
