There was a big shakeout yesterday at Random House and layoffs at Simon &amp; Schuster. Along with last month&#8217;s announcement that Houghton Mifflin Harcourt was &#8220;freezing&#8221; acqusitions &#8212; leading to the resignation of its publisher &#8212; the industry looks like it&#8217;s reeling.<\/p>\n<p>Kassia Kroszer thinks that <a href=\"http:\/\/booksquare.com\/what-if-you-saved-an-imprint-and-nobody-came\/\" target=\"_blank\">imprints don&#8217;t mean much and that independent publishers have a great opportunity ahead<\/a>, since they don&#8217;t need to worry about generating profits that would satisfy a multinational corporation.<\/p>\n<p>Eric Wolff thinks that publishing needs to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.observer.com\/2008\/media\/what-makes-moguls-believe-they-belong-book-business\" target=\"_blank\">return to its roots as a hobby for literary rich folk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and here&#8217;s a link I&#8217;ve been sitting on for a little while: Theodore Dalrymple on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newenglishreview.org\/custpage.cfm\/frm\/28194\/sec_id\/28194\" target=\"_blank\">used bookshops and inscriptions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Talk amongst y&#8217;selves . . .<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m still a bit under the weather, so I won&#8217;t offer much commentary on these posts about book publishing.
