{"id":3519,"date":"2009-02-26T12:17:54","date_gmt":"2009-02-26T17:17:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chimeraobscura.com\/vm\/?p=3519"},"modified":"2009-02-26T12:17:54","modified_gmt":"2009-02-26T17:17:54","slug":"kindleicious","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/chimeraobscura.com\/vm\/kindleicious","title":{"rendered":"Kindleicious"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To celebrate the arrival of my new Kindle (I sold my first-gen model for $270 on Amazon last week), here are a bunch of articles about e-book pricing and why publishers are scared crapless by the example of Apple and iTunes:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Kassia Kroszer, who writes wonderfully about this stuff on her blog, argues that <a href=\"http:\/\/booksquare.com\/ebook-pricing-who-chooses\/\" target=\"_blank\">$9.99 is tops for what consumers will pay<\/a>. I agree, as there are a number of Kindle books that I&#8217;ve blown off because they&#8217;re priced above that, including the new translation of <em>War &amp; Peace<\/em> (which I finally bought a minute ago after the price dropped from $22+ to $8.96).<\/li>\n<li>Here&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abbeville.com\/blog\/?p=2968\" target=\"_blank\">an interview with Ms. Kroszer<\/a>!<\/li>\n<li>Here&#8217;s a publisher at HarpersStudio <a href=\"http:\/\/theharperstudio.com\/2009\/02\/why-e-books-cost-money-to-publish\" target=\"_blank\">explaining why paper, printing and binding (PPB) only account for about $2.00 of a book&#8217;s price<\/a>, and therefore why Kindle books need to cost a lot more than $10. It looks like he doesn&#8217;t account for bookstore returns in that estimate; overprinting and getting stuck with tons of unsold copies doesn&#8217;t occur with an e-verison, of course. And he may be lying.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/theharperstudio.com\/2009\/02\/the-kindle-and-questioning-the-economics-of-ebook-publishingthe-conversation-continues\/\" target=\"_blank\">This guy disagrees with that guy<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Jason Epstein still wants a <a href=\"http:\/\/toc.oreilly.com\/2009\/02\/full-text-of-jason-epsteins-to.html\" target=\"_blank\">high-speed machine that will make print copies of books on demand<\/a>. No, seriously.
