{"id":3827,"date":"2009-04-21T10:42:47","date_gmt":"2009-04-21T14:42:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chimeraobscura.com\/vm\/?p=3827"},"modified":"2009-04-21T10:42:47","modified_gmt":"2009-04-21T14:42:47","slug":"roman-gods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/chimeraobscura.com\/vm\/roman-gods","title":{"rendered":"Roman Gods"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m working my way through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0679600086?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=virtualmemories-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0679600086\">Plutarch&#8217;s Lives<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=virtualmemories-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0679600086\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/> (or <em>Parallel Lives<\/em>, if you like). I decided not to challenge myself to blog about it, the way I did with Montaigne, because I didn&#8217;t like the way that made me rush through some of the essays in an attempt to compress\/distill them. I&#8217;m still glad I made my way through his work, but I need to revisit many of them. With Plutarch, I&#8217;ll share what I can, but I make no promises.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, while reading the life of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Numa_Pompilius\" target=\"_blank\">Numa Pompilius<\/a>, the successor to Romulus as king of Rome, I came across this wonderful passage:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>To the god Terminus, or Boundary, they offer to this day both public and private sacrifices, upon the borders and stone-marks of their land; living victims now, though anciently those sacrifices were solemnized without blood; for Numa reasoned that the god of boundaries, who watched over peace, and testified to fair dealing, should have no concern with blood.<\/p>\n<p>It is very clear that it was this king who first prescribed bounds to the territory of Rome; for Romulus would but have openly betrayed how much he had encroached on his neighbors&#8217; lands, had he ever set limits to his own; for boundaries are, indeed, a defense to those who choose to observe them, but are only a testimony against the dishonesty of those who break them.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m working my way through Plutarch&#8217;s Lives (or Parallel Lives, if you like).
