Only having thought up this idea this morning, I decided to dive into the &#8220;canonical appendixes&#8221; of Harold Bloom&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1573225142?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=virtualmemories-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1573225142\">Western Canon<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=virtualmemories-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=1573225142\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/>, since the lists of authors and books are broken up by nationality.<\/p>\n<p>Except for Latin America, which is lumped together. So I had to spend a few minutes checking out the nationality of all the authors he listed, only to discover that he only has two Mexican authors on his list and I&#8217;ve actually read a book by one of them (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0374511713?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=virtualmemories-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0374511713\">Aura<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=virtualmemories-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0374511713\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/>, by Carlos Fuentes)! Grr!<\/p>\n<p>Bloom&#8217;s list did manage to yield a Mexican 0-fer author for me: <a href=\"http:\/\/nobelprize.org\/nobel_prizes\/literature\/laureates\/1990\/paz-bio.html\" target=\"_blank\">Octavio Paz<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For the sake of bulking up this post, here&#8217;s the full list of Bloom&#8217;s canonical authors of Latin America (in the sequence he lists them), with 0-fer annotations:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Rub\u00c3\u00a9n Dar\u00c3\u00ado (Nicaragua): 0-fer<\/li>\n<li>Jorge Luis Borges (Argentina): I&#8217;ve even read his long novel!<\/li>\n<li>Alejo Carpentier (Cuba): 0-fer<\/li>\n<li>Guillermo Cabrera Infante (Cuba): 0-fer<\/li>\n<li>Severo Sarduy (Cuba): 0-fer<\/li>\n<li>Reinaldo Arenas (Cuba): 0-fer.
