I never thought I&#8217;d have to register as a lobbyist with the U.S. Congress, but that happened last month. I also\u00a0never thought I&#8217;d be asked to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goethe.de\/ins\/us\/de\/sta\/ney\/ver.cfm?fuseaction=events.detail&amp;event_id=20503228\" target=\"_blank\">moderate a panel on Satirical Depictions of Hitler in Contemporary Culture<\/a>, but here we are! (I will admit to a\u00a0lifelong phobia of\u00a0being exposed as a fraud by Hitler, so hey.) On May 6, at the Goethe-Institut in NYC (30 Irving Place), I&#8217;ll be the moderator for this:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h1>Satirical Depictions of Hitler in Contemporary Culture<\/h1>\n<p>Together with the German Book Office, the Goethe-Institut New York hosts a panel discussion that examines representations of Adolf Hitler in contemporary western culture, ranging from feature films and advertising campaigns to political caricatures and polemics. The focus of the debate will be on Germany, where the critical memory culture that was set in place in the 1960s has recently been eroded by more satirical approaches to the Nazi past that have their origin in the Anglo-American context and the comedies of figures such as Charlie Chaplin and Ernst Lubitsch. <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Timur_Vermes\" target=\"_blank\">Timur Vermes<\/a>&#8216; bestseller <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1623653339\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1623653339&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=voyantpublishing&amp;linkId=JP7SNBDAA26JGAAA\">Look Who&#8217;s Back<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=voyantpublishing&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=1623653339\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/> (2012, English translation, MacLehose 2013), which imagines Hitler returning to life in present-day Berlin is the latest example of this shift in German memory and what appears to be a collective desire for a normalized relationship to the country\u2019s troubled past. The author will be in conversation with <em>New York Times<\/em> book critic and author\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lieslschillinger.com\" target=\"_blank\">Liesl Schillinger;<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/gavrielrosenfeld.weebly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gavriel D. Rosenfeld<\/a>, a professor of history at Fairfield University and author of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/110742397X\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=110742397X&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=voyantpublishing&amp;linkId=DN7RWM4ZHKZWTUVG\">Hi Hitler!: How the Nazi Past is Being Normalized in Contemporary Culture<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=voyantpublishing&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=110742397X\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/> (2015).
