Dark Saturday

Well, the cassuolet was well-received, as was the chocolate cake. It was a nice evening all around, until the blackout around 8pm. We busted out a ton of candles, drank and bantered till around 11pm, at which point all 4 of us crashed out.

Still no power today, so we’ve stopped in at my office to check e-mail, look up movie schedules, and figure out if our favorite dim sum place is open on Sunday.

  1. I’m kinda jealous of the weather you’re having (not the power outages though). We’re in the middle of the worst drought we’ve had in 100 years, and things are getting pretty scary in terms of drinking water supplies. The authorities are looking at recycling effluent and have major water use restrictions in place. They haven’t had decent rain in rural Queensland for years, and farmers are going broke and leaving the land in droves.
It rained for a few days last week for the first time in 6 months and most of the people in my office watched mesmerised as the raindrops ran down the windows because it was such a novelty. I’ve never seen so many people so happy to get a soaking. Brisbanites usually complain when it rains, but not this time. It wasn’t much fun walking home in it; but knowing it was at least falling in the catchment areas helped a lot. Maybe we’ve just put a few more days in between us and having to drink our own urine when the dams dry up completely…

  2. I would drink a not inconsiderable amount of treated pee if it meant they would finally fix my phone line that went out during the floods August 2-3.

  3. Our major telecommunications provider just became 100% privatised, so I’m sure we can also look forward to lots of dodgy phone service in addition to drinking pee. At least it won’t be raining though…
