I actually meant “there’s no goddamn way the building next to the CCTV building is going to stand up.”
Of course I’m hoping there are no fatalities from the fire, but I still believe that kooky main CCTV building is going to tip over in a stiff wind.
Did you guys hear about the fires down here? The death toll is currently 173 and it’s going to rise. It’s just surreal. Nobody can really understand how the firestorm could just come through without warning and move so fast.
Yeah, it’s been getting a lot of coverage up here. It’s nowhere near where you’re situated, right? (I have no sense of Australia’s geography.)
I’ve been wondering just how slow Australians are, so I’m glad to find out that it’s more a function of the fire’s speed.
It’s half a continent away. At the moment where I live is a patch of normality. To our north are once-in-100-year floods and the fires are in the south.
We have a bushfire season every year, but it is very rare that anyone dies. Even the Ash Wednesday fires about 20 years ago (where 75 people died) was nowhere near as bad as the recent fires. The police expect the death toll to top 300, and when you consider how sparsely populated this part of the country is it makes it even more shocking.
This was a bad combination of 63mph winds, tinderbox dry conditions due to years of drought and 113 degree heat. Then there are the psycopathic firebugs who deliberately light fires….
There will be a royal commission to investigate the way we manage backburning and firebreaks outside of the fire season and the ‘leave early or stay and defend your property’ strategy, but when you see the damage and hear how quickly the fires came through you wonder if there was enough warning to get anyone out. Perhaps in future if these weather conditions occur they will just evacuate everyone even there isn’t a hint of fire.
It turns out that abortion started the fire! Lousy abortion!
Indeed….Very apt that this nut is from Catch the Fire ministries. In other wacko news people are also blaming Islamic jihadists for lighting the fires.
