Russia is, most certainly, a criminal state at this point; the Russian mafia has infiltrated every level of government. “The entire country is kind of a gangster,” said a Georgian colleague of mine who just returned from a visit to Moscow. “I felt very unsafe.” Beyond her feelings, there have been numerous articles about how deeply entrenched corruption is.
As footnote, Gaddis had some very harsh criticism for Solzhenitsyn in THE RUSH FOR SECOND PLACE although I cannot recall the gist of it.
