what a loss – such a great artist –
of course the NY Times would NEVER mention that he was a Jew, or Holocaust survivor, but just that his father was “taken hostage and killed by invading Nazis” –
if anyone wants to know more, then ” … at 16, his Jewish family was forced to flee their home when France entered the Second World War. ….. his father, a kosher butcher, was arrested by the Gestapo and murdered in Auschwitz concentration camp.”
it’s quite a sretch from “hostage … killed” to “arrested … murdered in Auschwitz” -. ..
