What It Is: 2/2/09

What I’m reading: The Montaigne. The Clive James.

What I’m listening to: Soul Mining, by The The

What I’m watching: It was movie-watching week for me! Monday: Charlie Wilson’s War (the Steve Martin strength of the opening scenes didn’t carry through, sadly, but it was pretty entertaining), Tuesday: The King of Comedy (my favorite Scorsese/Deniro movie), Wednesday: Quick Change (I was transfixed by the c. 1990 version of NYC, and also by Geena Davis), Thursday: Human Nature (with the weirdly talented Miranda Otto) and Annie Hall (it’s been almost a year! This time, I really focused on the amazing job done by Diane Keaton). Oh, and there was some football game.

What I’m drinking: Miller’s (Westbourne Strength) and Q Tonic, and a bunch of Yuengling & Killian’s.

What Rufus is up to: Praying for springtime. I can tell.

Where I’m going: No plans. Got any ideas?

What I’m happy about: Getting down to Philadelphia this weekend to see my pal Drake for a celebration of the 10th anniversary of his horrendous beating (that is, a celebration that he’s survived the experience).

What I’m sad about: Everything he lost.

What I’m pondering: Whether to help Drake out by becoming a trustee for him.

What It Is: 1/26/09

What I’m reading: The Alcoholic, a boring comic book by Jonathan Ames and Dean Haspiel, and The Hot Rock, by the late, lamented Donald Westlake. Otherwise, same as last week: Montaigne and Clive James.

What I’m listening to: Bebel Gilberto records

What I’m watching: The last episodes of Arrested Development.

What I’m drinking: Plymouth & Q Tonic

What Rufus is up to: Playing with his new squeaky toy, a big plush pheasant. It’s holding up remarkably well to his chomping, but he’s gotten crazy-possessive about it.

Where I’m going: To Philadelphia next Saturday to visit a pal.

What I’m happy about: Since dropping Instapundit, Vodkapundit and Andrew Sullivan from my rotation, I’m able to read my daily RSS feeds much more quickly!

What I’m sad about: That the last season of Arrested Development fell so flat.

What I’m pondering: How much weight Portia de Rossi dropped from the beginning of the series to the end. We might have to go back and check out the first few episodes just to see.

Impressions of Air

I got a Macbook Air yesterday. It was a refurbished model from the first generation: 1.8ghz, 64gb SSD (a solid-state drive, instead of the 80gb hard disk option). It cost 45% of the original price (it debuted a year ago): down to $1,299 from $2,899.

My rationale for buying it — once the price got so low — was to have a lightweight computer for travel. I know it may sound like a useless extravagance, but there’s a big difference between 5.5 lbs. and 3 lbs. when you’re on the road.

First impressions:

Man, this thing is light and thin. My IT guy said it feels like it’s half a laptop, as if the monitor had fallen off or something.

I don’t have a case for it yet, so I put it in a 10″ x 13″ Tyvek envelope when I left the office yesterday.

It runs pretty cool. I haven’t tried playing a video on it yet, but just doing my standard internettery (Firefox, NetNewsWire) generates a lot less heat than my Macbook Pro does.

The screen is insanely bright. I maxed out the brightness last night and had to look away because the whites were so glaring. The screen also doesn’t have to warm up; it reaches regular brightness instantly when you wake it up or start.

Because there’s no optical drive and no platters for the hard drive, it was difficult to tell whether the laptop had turned on when I hit the power button. I accidentally shut it off twice while trying to get it to start. It’s really weird, not hearing any of the minute clicks-and-whirrs of a hard drive.

The audio is tinny.

My USB drive feels a little snug in the flip-down USB port, but my Verizon 3G antenna fits in there just fine, as does my Flip video. The port does snap shut a little too easily when I’m trying to get a USB item in there. I’ll probably need to bring a USB-extender cable along when I travel (since I’m a big Boy Scout).

The long, narrow button of the trackpad is a little less responsive than the one on my main laptop.

It seems to boot up faster than my Pro, but I’ll have to test that sometime.

I felt a little weird about getting a computer that only has 64gb of memory, but that limit has made me think about what I actually need to keep on a laptop, and how much space I’m wasting on that Macbook Pro.

In fact, the Air may become my primary laptop, as I reassess what I need/use a laptop for. Since I do all my layout work on my desktop computer (a 24″, 2.8ghz, 4gb RAM iMac), as well as most of my photo-tweaking, I don’t need a  laptop with a crazy-fast processor, tons of memory or a big screen. As long as playing a 2-hour movie doesn’t cause the computer to overheat and shut off, it should be just fine for travel.

It’s early days; I’ll try to update this if I have any more impressions.

What It Is: 1/12/09

What I’m reading: I tried Richard Flanagan’s novel, The Unknown Terrorist, but quit after 35 pages. I don’t know how to put it exactly, but the prose itself was hateful. I really don’t get the Kundera pastiche in the first 2 pages, either. Anyway, life’s too short for shitty novels, so I’ll stick with Montaigne for the moment.

What I’m listening to: A new Mad Mix I just finished putting together.

What I’m watching: Finishing up season 2 of Arrested Development.

What I’m drinking: Blue Point’s Toasted Lager and my above-standard G&Ts.

What Rufus is up to: No hike this week, due to snow! Aaiee!

Where I’m going: Nowhere in particular.

What I’m happy about: Getting birthday wishes from a bazillion friends and my family yesterday. Thanks, everybody! I hope 38 is as fun as 37 was!

What I’m sad about: That my uncle in Israel is likely going to need bypass surgery. This means that Dad and both of his brothers have needed this procedure. Looks like I better add red wine to my What I’m drinking section. (Oh, and the Giants lost to the Eagles. Grr.)

What I’m pondering: Whether Sting knows how bad he looks.

What It Is: 1/5/09

What I’m reading: The Last Good Kiss, by James Crumley, and Joe Nocera’s long and worthwhile NYTimes magazine article about the risk management and its role in the financial meltdown.

What I’m listening to: Listen Without Prejudice, Vol. 1, by George Michael and 24 Hours, by Tom Jones.

What I’m watching: The Godfather, I & II.

What I’m drinking: Plymouth & Q Tonic, and Martin Ray merlot 2005.

What Rufus is up to: Getting ready to have his first day of alone-time in more than 2 weeks.

Where I’m going: Nowhere, although I really oughtta get down to Philly sometime to see my friend Drake before he moves away.

What I’m happy about: A pal of mine from college, Craig Gidney, just published a short story collection: Sea, Swallow Me. (I really oughtta make a side-page of links to books by my friends and acquaintances.) And a childhood pal of mine whom I haven’t seen in 20 years got in touch this weekend, leading to a catch-up dinner on Sunday.

What I’m sad about: Having to go right back to work.

What I’m pondering: Whether I should score some weed and prostitutes at my local Burger King.

Low-res

My health is fine, my finances are in order and my job seems pretty secure, so I don’t have much by way of “you must change your life” New Year resolutions. I did pretty well on my main one for 2008: post to this blog every day. There were still a couple of down days, but I think I did well.

Here’s my list of 2009 resolutions:

  1. To finish reading Montaigne’s essays
  2. To not begin writing Tuesday Morning Plutarch once I’m done with Monday Morning Montaigne
  3. To read more poetry (and maybe fewer novels)
  4. To get back to practicing yoga
  5. To get back to drinking only water, black coffee or gin (well, maybe I’ll add wine to the list this time)
  6. To brush Rufus’ teeth 3x weekly

Let’s see yours!
